Title
Letter from Lord Cornwallis to George, Prince of Wales, on [William Henry] Watts; on military action against Tippoo; and on administrative achievements in Bengal
Date
18 November 1790
Writer
Cornwallis, 2nd Earl
Addressee
George, Prince of Wales (1762-1830)
Description
Cornwallis states that as Army Officers are not permitted to join the [East India] Company with the same rank; it would be unjust for Watts to enter the Army with the same rank he held in the Company; and recommends he return to England. On military affairs, Cornwallis discusses [Tipu Sultan's] 'unexpected irruption into the Coimbatore country' and capture of Palacatcherry; and the actions of Colonel [John] Floyd and General [William] Medows. Cornwallis determines to take on the command of the Army, to increase the confidence of their Allies.
