Citation

To cite Royal Archives Online, please use the following format:

Royal Archives Online (http://********, March 2025)

To cite files and documents in the Royal Archives, quote the Reference, Title and Date information found in the catalogue record, as in the following examples:

  • RA SP/M/15/23: Mary of Modena to Le Comte de Soissons, 26 March 1685
  • RA MP/1/4: Letter from Francis Baring to Lord Melbourne, 21 June 1837
  • RA VIC/MAIN/F/47: Correspondence about Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, June - December 1887
  • RA VIC/MAIN/EVIID/1901: Engagement diary of Edward VII, 1901

For the Georgian Papers, references are typically in the form GEO/MAIN/ or GEO/ADD/ and should be referenced as in the following examples:

  • RA GEO/MAIN/36792: Queen Charlotte to the Prince Regent, 28 July 1816
  • RA GEO/ADD/32/2453: Essay on the geography of Hungary [1746-1805]

Where a document has a reference number range, rather than one reference number i.e. GEO/ADD/32/2033-2036, the full reference should be given. If it is necessary to quote certain pages of a document, use existing pagination if available e.g. GEO/ADD/32/2033-2036, p.5. If there is no existing pagination, or there is foliation, use foliation in the citation, e.g. GEO/ADD/32/2033-2036, f.3r.

Royal Archives Online also includes some material from the Royal Library. The references of items from the Royal Library are preceded with 'RCIN' and should be referenced as in the following example:

  • RCIN 1028949: A Catalogue of His Majesty's Library at Windsor, 1780
  • Please acknowledge the source as Royal Archives, Windsor, or Royal Library, Windsor.
