The Prince writes that 'we have unfortunately been oblig'd to acknowledge to each other that we cannot find happiness in our union. Circumstances of character & education, ... render that impossible'. He suggests that the Princess's letter has been designed to be shown to others, in order to gain support.
Endorsed 'answer to the Princess's Letter April 21st 1796', 'no. 1'.
