Admin History | Henry Hawley (1685-1759) was a British army officer, commanding troops of Dragoons at the Battle of Culloden in 1745 and fighting in other significant battles in the first half of the 18th century, including Vigo in 1719 and Fontenoy in 1745. Hawley remained a Colonel of the 4th Dragoons until his death and also served as Governor of Portsmouth from 1752 to 1759.
Henry Hawley never married but had a long-term relationship with Elizabeth Toovey. Her second son, William Toovey, took Hawley's name following Henry's death. |
