TitleLetter to Magdalene Dalton from her cousin, J.A.Lowes, written from Fort Smith, Arkansas, United States of America.
Date13 April 1868
WriterLowes, J.A.
AddresseeDalton, Magdalene, Mrs; miniature painter
DescriptionAfter so long a silence, Lowes is at a loss at how to commence this long delayed letter and he hardly knows whether it will be received in anger at his apparent neglect or in pity for the misfortunes that have occasioned his protracted silence. For an account of all his doings up to the present time, Lowes refers Magdalene to a long letter he has written to his mother. If after reading it, she can forgive him, Lowes asks Magdalene to write to let him know how her health is and how matters are progressing about which he is most anxious.
Lowes writes that he has been very sick but is now quite well; though the climate does not agree with him, he is obliged to remain for a short time. He will write again soon with an account of what he has seen of this country and its people.
