TitleLetter from Sarah Haigh to Magdalene Ross, regarding her work as a governess, her studies and the comfort she has found in religion.
Date28 November 1836
WriterHaigh, Sarah, Miss
AddresseeRoss, Magdalene, Miss; miniature painter
DescriptionSarah Haigh is glad to hear that Magdalene benefited from her journeyings. She thinks it is good for both body and mind to go among new scenes and circumstances and knows what it has done for her. She is quite a different creature from what she was before she went to Cheshunt, it has given her new life and new energy.
Miss Haigh gives an account of her daily work as a governess, in addition to details of her studies, particularly Latin and Scripture, the latter which she encourages Miss Ross to learn. She hopes that Miss Ross likes the little book she sent her. She has been reading one lately called 'Recollections of a Departed Son' by Mr East of Bristol and transcribes an extract for Miss Ross's interest, which speaks of the time when the son first began to seek God.
Miss Haigh reports that she is very happy and that her perplexing thoughts and desponding fears are gone. Her sins have been washed away and she wants to overcome the 'selfishness of her natural heart'.

As a postcript to the letter, Miss Haigh writes that she has kept it a long time without sending it, as she wondered whether it was proper to say so much about one's own feelings. But she has a great desire that Miss Ross should feel that 'real religion is in the heart. I know what a change the love of Jesus Christ has produced in me so that now I utterly abominate those things which, when you last saw me, I took delight in.' Miss Haigh urges Miss Ross to 'love my God and Saviour; then you will be quite sure to love me as much as is right' and concludes by apologising again for her previous proud and inpertinent behaviour.
