TitleLetter from Thomas Wyse to Magdalene Dalton regarding a miniature of his sister, Elizabeth Barnes.
Date12 December 1853
WriterWyse, Thomas
AddresseeDalton, Magdalene, Mrs; miniature painter
DescriptionMr Wyse writes that Mrs Dalton's letter enclosing the post office order arrived yesterday and he was further gratified by the arrival of Mr Barnes who brought the miniature of their dear departed sister, for which he sends his heartfelt and grateful thanks. He finds it astonishing how Mrs Dalton could execute from memory so correct a resemblance. He thinks the miniature he has been sent is excellent, but the one of Mrs Barnes, in ivory, made him think it was their dear Bess looking at him. It is perfection and is treasured by the owner.
His mother suffers occasionally and he fears there is no hope of immediate relief. She thanks Mrs Dalton for her kind enquiries and for the remedy she told her about but Mr Wyse cannot say whether she has acted on the suggestion. He hopes to send his mother away from home for a change of air when spring comes, perhaps to Scotland.
Mr Wyse reports that he recently recovered a debt which was considered of a doubtful nature and is therefore no longer in immediate need of percuniary assistance of the balance that Mrs Dalton seems to trouble herself too much about. She can pay whenever she pleases and if she is not able to send another farthing for the next twelve months, it will no make no difference to him. Mr Wyse closes by sending Christmas and New Year greetings.
