Description | Queen Victoria reports that 'The Title [Empress of India] is now formally & officially to be adopted'. In relation to Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, the Queen notes that 'Affie will not have an independent Command but be under Admiral Sir J. Drummond... I am rather nervous at his having the Command of so large a ship to which he is not accustomed. The responsibility is so great.'. The Queen comments that 'Poor Albert [Henry George] Grey [later 4th Earl] I fear will not be the better for this attack of illness for some time', and that Lady Augusta Stanley 'is decidedly stronger but speaking is difficult'. The Queen refers to the deaths of James Meredith (State Page), H.T. Harrison (which she sees as 'a terrible loss'), and John N. Kraeusslach, who she notes 'must be connected with your earliest recollections...the last of dear Papa's oldest servants who came much in contact with him'. |
