Date4 February 1869
WriterAlbert Edward, Prince of Wales (1841-1910)

DescriptionThe Prince expresses a favourable impression of Prince Louis of Battenberg. He reports on his travels in Egypt. Sir Samuel Baker is accompanying the Prince and Princess of Wales on their journey up the Nile, and 'Has really taken a great deal of trouble to make all the necessary arrangements'. The Prince praises Edward Stanton: 'a most excellent representative of England' [at Cairo]. Captain Colin A. Campbell of 'HMS Ariadne' was taken ill and left at Malta; his cousin, Captain Frederick Campbell, was sent to replace him. The Prince comments on Reverend William Lake Onslow, Chaplain and Naval Instructor on 'HMS Ariadne'. He describes his activities in Cairo, and refers to a meeting with Oswald Brierly at the beginning of the tour in Egypt. The Prince hopes for the Queen's permission to visit Athens, Constantinople and the Crimea, returning to England at the beginning of May.
