TitleLetter from Joseph Cundall to Dr. Ernst Becker regarding progress on photographing works by Raphael in several collections, at present greatly hindered by poor weather.
Date22 December 1859
WriterCundall, Joseph; photographer
AddresseeBecker, Ernst, Dr.; Librarian to the Prince Consort
DescriptionCundall writes that he is sending 'rough impressions' of Henry Hope's picture and 2 drawings from Holkham; photographs of works belonging to Lord Lansdowne, Edmund Bankes, William Stuart, Lord Leconfield and Mr Okeover will be sent soon; G.E.H. Vernon's picture will be photographed if the weather turns milder, as it freezes the nitrate on the glass plates at present.
He reports that Lord Ward has two pictures of 'Three Saints', of which the one in his Park Lane gallery was not the one exhibited in Manchester, and asks if he should photograph this one. He asks permission to delay photographing the large painting, 'Christ on the Cross', until March so that 'better photographic weather' will enable it to be photographed in situ.
He concludes with a report on progress, much hampered by fog, on obtaining photographs of Buckingham Palace, St James's Palace, Dover and Fenton's Hotel, adding that he is sending instructions for the Naples photographer, and that Messrs Caldesi & Montecchi report that they could not photograph several of Lord Ward's pictures.
