TitleLetter from J.C. Robinson to Charles Ruland sending photographs of two Raphael drawings in his possession for the Prince Consort's collection.
Date5 April 1860
WriterRobinson, John Charles; Keeper of Art Collections, South Kensington Museum
AddresseeRuland, Charles; Librarian to the Prince Consort
DescriptionRobinson writes that he is sending two photographs by Charles Thurston Thompson of drawings by Raphael in his possession, for the Prince Consort's collection. The first is of an original in bistre which he bought at the sale of the Bouverie collection; it is unknown and has never been engraved.
The second, also in bistre, is from the Reveley collection and is well-known, having been engraved in Metz's 'Imitations'; stylistically it resembles Marcantonio's engraving of the Marriage of Alexander and Roxane from Raphael's design and probably dates from 1518-20.
Metz's 'Imitations' refers to 'Imitations of Ancient & Modern Drawings Engraved and Published by C.M. Metz', 1789.
