TitleLetter from John Scott to Dr. Ernst Becker giving information about the provenance and present ownership of a Raphael cartoon and stating that his firm has bought all Fenton's Crimean photographs.
Date29 December 1856
WriterScott, John
AddresseeBecker, Ernst, Dr.; Librarian to the Prince Consort
DescriptionScott states that his firm [?Colnaghi & Scott] bought the cartoon of 'The Virgin and Child' by Raphael from a Mr Rogers, who they understood had acquired it on the Continent. Edward Cheney of Badger Hall told them of a reference, in a guide book to Perugia, of a similar cartoon that belonged to the Ceccomani family and had passed, with their collection, to a Paduan family into which the last of the Ceccomani family married. Scott's firm sold it to William Coningham of Brighton, and it is now in the collection of Colonel Stirling.
Scott adds that his firm has just bought all Fenton's photographs of the Crimea, which they intend to sell at almost half the published prince. The negatives are said by Fenton to be in excellent condition.
Finally, Scott states that he has written to Florence about the print of the Florentine lady after Raphael engraved by Picciante.
[The writer seems likely to be John Anthony Scott, partner of Colnaghi. 'Picciante' may be Giovanni Domenico Picchianti, Florentine engraver].
