| Description | Tiffin reports that at the Woodburn sale he bought many of the best drawings by Raphael and Michelangelo, on behalf of the British Museum, which he is sure Mr Carpenter will be happy to show to Ruland. He adds that some of the other drawings went to Paris, while Ludwig Gruner bought some for the Dresden art gallery. Mr Robinson bought a number for the South Kensington Museum, and the private buyers included Sir T. Phillips, Sir John Hippisley, Mr Bale, Mr Vaughan, Messrs Colnaghi and Mr Farrer.
Tiffin regrets that Ruland did not see the exhibition of the principal drawings at Christie's before the sale, but is glad that most of the best ones have been secured for the nation. He hopes Ruland received the sale catalogues that he sent long before the sale. |
