Date25 May 1857
WriterEastlake, Charles, Sir; Director of the National Gallery
AddresseePhipps, Charles, Col. Hon.; Keeper of the Privy Purse
Description(14) Eastlake says that he is writing to Phipps in the absence of Dr. Becker. He has traced the portrait of the Marquis of Mantua mentioned by Passavant as belonging to Mr Gray; it is now owned by Mr Lucy of Charlecote. It is evidently the same as the one mentioned in Charles I's catalogue.
(14a) He describes the painting, which he doubts is by Raphael, and encloses a pen sketch of it indicating colours and giving approximate measurements.
He adds that Dr. Waagen is staying with him and says that Mr Harzen of Hamburg is in London and ready to show the Prince Consort the drawings he is interested in.
