TitleLetter from Sir Charles Eastlake to Dr. Ernst Becker sending a photograph of a picture of a Madonna owned by Gaetan Tir of Naples.
Date6 July 1857
WriterEastlake, Charles, Sir; Director of the National Gallery
AddresseeBecker, Ernst, Dr.; Librarian to the Prince Consort
DescriptionEastlake sends Becker a letter (not present) from Gaetan Tir of Naples concerning a picture of a Madonna owned by Tir, to whom he has replied that according to Passavant the original of it is in the Escorial and that there are several other copies, including one owned by Mr Bankes of Kingston Lacey which is slightly different. He told Tir that the National Gallery would not want it, but he accepted a photograph of it which he encloses in case the Prince Consort would like to add it to his collection.
He and Dr. Waagen agree in attributing it to Giulio Romano rather than Raphael. He notes a comparison with an outline in Kugler and another possible one in Landon (art historical works).
