| Description | Dr. Wellesley writes that he has compared the photographs of his Raphael drawings [sent to him by Ruland] with the originals, and is delighted that so many of the most important ones have been successful, notably Raphael's sister, two chalk heads, the Mameluks, the large hand and the dead body for a crucifixion.
He regrets that the Isaiah has not come out well, but realises that chalk sketches on worn paper of a warm tint are the most difficult to photograph. But the Prince's present of the photographs has given him pleasure and enhanced his appreciation of the originals. He remains convinced that his small drawing of a female head is by the Carracci.
He adds that there seems to have been a mistake over the photographs he was sent: one of figures for an Adoration of the Shepherds is not from his collection, and there is no mounted photograph of his tondo of the Almighty separating light from darkness. |
