Title
Letter from William Hookham Carpenter, the Keeper of Prints & Drawings at the British Museum, concerning a drawing in the Cracherode collection, praising the Prince Consort's Raphael collection and expressing his willingness to help.
Date
25 July 1861
Writer
Carpenter, William Hookham; Keeper of Prints & Drawings, British Museum
Addressee
Ruland, Charles; Librarian to the Prince Consort
Description
Carpenter writes that he believes a study of a man's head mentioned by Passavant is the head in black chalk ascribed to Pinturicchio in the British Museum's catalogue of the Cracherode collection; but he thinks that both the head and the pen sketch of St Sebastian on the back are very like Perugino. He congratulates Ruland on obtaining photographs of the [Raphael] drawings at Lille and Haarlem; he did not know of any by Raphael in Haarlem. He comments that art lovers are indebted to the Prince Consort for the opportunity he has given them of studying the photographs of drawings abroad, and will be anxious to help in this laudable project. He himself will be proud to be able to assist in regard to the drawings under his charge.
