TitleLetter from William Hookham Carpenter, the Keeper of Prints & Drawings at the British Museum, to Charles Ruland giving his views on the authorship of several drawings.
Date10 December 1861
WriterCarpenter, William Hookham; Keeper of Prints & Drawings, British Museum
AddresseeRuland, Charles; Librarian to the Prince Consort
DescriptionCarpenter writes that he is sure a drawing shown to him by Mr Reid at Ruland's request is by Battista Franco, from the fresco in the Loggie. As for the 3 sheets of studies, the first with sketches of the agony of Our Saviour does not remind him of any particular artist; the second, with sketches of the same subject, has figures recalling Michelangelo, and likewise the third, with sketches of horses. He does not know the work of Baldassare Peruzzi well, although he was influenced by both Raphael and Michelangelo; but if there are drawings by him in the Royal Collection, Ruland may be able to judge whether the drawings are by him. He adds that neither he nor Tiffin has seen the original Raphael sketch of which Ruland sent him the Comte St Morys's facsimile.
