TitleLetter from William Hookham Carpenter, the Keeper of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum, to Dr. Ernst Becker concerning the possible purchase by the Museum of Miss Woodburn's drawings.
Date14 December 1858
WriterCarpenter, William Hookham; Keeper of Prints and Drawings, British Museum
AddresseeBecker, Ernst, Dr.; Librarian to the Prince Consort
DescriptionCarpenter reports that the Principal Librarian of the Museum, Anthony Panizzi, is very anxious to secure Miss Woodburn's collection of drawings for the Museum. Carpenter has also shown Becker's letter about it to Sir Charles Eastlake, who will accompany him to see the drawings.
Meanwhile, from the catalogue of the King of Holland's sale Carpenter has established that Samuel Woodburn bought 106 drawings for 36,376 florins (rather than francs, upon which Becker mistakenly based his calculation). With the auction duty paid, this makes an average price per drawing of £40. Carpenter is hopeful that the government will approve a grant for the purchase.
A note by Becker records that he replied on 15 December.
