TitleLetter from Joseph Cundall to Dr. Ernst Becker about photographing works by Raphael belonging to Thomas Baring.
Date23 April 1859
WriterCundall, Joseph; photographer
AddresseeBecker, Ernst, Dr.; Librarian to the Prince Consort
DescriptionCundall reports that he has seen and has an appointment to photograph Thomas Baring's Raphaels, but one is too dark, like the Francia picture, which he has tried 20 times to photograph. He hopes that Becker will be able to have the small picture from Wilton sent up [to London] so that he can use another technique to get a better photograph.
He adds that both Wilton pictures have the seal of the Accademia Clementina of Bologna on the back. In a P.S. he describes a technique used by Colnaghi's to photograph dark paintings and asks whether he could try this with the Francia.
Finally, he reports that he has received the Duke of Northumberland's permission to photograph his two Raphaels.
