TitleLetter from Joseph Cundall to Dr. Ernst Becker reporting on progress with commissions to photograph Raphael pictures in various collections.
Date27 October 1859
WriterCundall, Joseph; photographer
AddresseeBecker, Ernst, Dr.; Librarian to the Prince Consort
DescriptionCundall writes that copies of his photographs of Lord Methuen's and Earl Spencer's Raphaels are on their way, and another of Thomas Baring's Holy Family will be ready soon. He reports on his visit to Holkham: he took successful photographs of 'The Virgin and Child with Flowers' and of an academy figure in red chalk; but the cartoon of 'La Belle Jardinière' has been impossible to photograph, being of grey-black chalk or charcoal on very dark brown paper. The Revd. Collyer [librarian at Holkham] is certain the drawing of Joseph and his Brethren is not in the collection. Cundall saw the architectural book but did not think the drawings of interest; Collyer will send further details so that Becker can judge. He offers Becker a list of all the Raphaels exhibited at the British Institution in the past few years. He has not yet approached Mr Hope.
