TitleLetter from G. E .H. Vernon to Dr. Ernst Becker putting his [Raphael] picture at the Prince Consort's disposal for photography and commenting on its provenance and authenticity.
Date16 December 1859
WriterVernon, G. E .H.; art collector, owner of Buxted Park
AddresseeBecker, Ernst, Dr.; Librarian to the Prince Consort
DescriptionVernon writes that he will arrange for his [Raphael] picture, which is at his London house, to be delivered to be photographed for the Prince Consort when required. He is gratified that HRH noticed it in the Manchester Exhibition; the only engraving of it is the outline of which Mrs Jameson copied part in her 'Legends of the Madonna'.
Vernon bought it from the Coesvelt collection and was told by Coesvelt's daughter that it was a great favourite of his. He found a reference to it in the Library of the Accademia in Florence, where it was described as being by Raphael and having hung in the Palazzo Rosso. Vernon is convinced it is by Raphael, of the same period as the 'Staffa Madonna' at Perugia. He would be glad to show Dr. Becker more of his collection.
