TitleLetter from the British Minister in Madrid to Dr. Ernst Becker sending the plates and photographs of three pictures in the Madrid Museum, together with the photographer's account
Date9 December [1858]
WriterBuchanan, Andrew; British Envoy to Spain 1858-1860
AddresseeBecker, Ernest, Dr.; Librarian to the Prince Consort
DescriptionBuchanan reports that he has conveyed the Prince Consort's thanks to the Duke of Alba for allowing his Raphael picture to be photographed. He sends a small box for the Prince containing the plates and photographs taken by Mr Clifford of three pictures in the Royal Museum in Madrid and the plate of the photograph of the Duke of Alba's picture, which was obtained from the photographer. He encloses two notes from Clifford (see VIC/ADDA10/85/317 and VIC/ADDA10/85/318) and Clifford's account, which he has paid.
Buchanan regrets the delay in carrying out the Prince' commission, caused by the difficulty of obtaining official confirmation of the verbal permission that had been given. He has heard that a similar favour was refused to the Duc de Montpensier.
A note by Becker at the end of the letter records his reply of 21 January 1859 thanking Buchanan and states that £15 was paid through the Foreign Office [to reimburse Buchanan for his payment to Clifford]; also a note to himself to send Buchanan the letter and parcel for Don Juan de Ortez de Zarrate (see Becker's note VIC/ADDA10/85/315).
