TitleLetter from Frédéric Reiset to Charles Ruland replying to his letter casting doubt on the authenticity of the drawing by Raphael which is the subject of the etching sent to him by Ruland.
Date20 April 1860
WriterReiset, Frédéric; Curator of drawings, Louvre
AddresseeRuland, Charles; German librarian to the Prince Consort
DescriptionReiset states that the etching of which Ruland has sent him a tracing does not appear in his copy of the Saint-Morys engravings. This may be because Saint-Morys made many engravings for his own amusement and probably made very few prints of each; when the collection was formed it was too late to find them all. But Reiset adds that he thinks the 'Raphael' drawing after which this etching was made, like many other engravings made by Saint-Morys supposedly after Raphael, was not in fact by Raphael, and is inclined to think it is a sketch by Bandinelli.
