| Description | Kanné writes that he has just heard that Alinari has delivered eight photographs to Mr French in Florence to be shipped to England. He reports that in spite of Prince Corsini's promise he has refused to give permission [for his cartoon of Pope Julius II to be photographed]; Kanné suggests that Becker write to the Prince. The Grand Duchess has also refused to allow her two [Raphael] drawings to be photographed, as has the Director of the Pitti Gallery with regard to the 'Portrait of a Young Woman', giving the difficulty of photographing the drawings as the reason. The same has happened with the picture of the two monks, and in this case Alinari agrees that it would be difficult to achieve a satisfactory result by the usual means.
Kanné lists the photographs which are on the way. From the Uffizi: Moses at the rock; The worship of the golden calf; Joseph at the well; the Prophet Daniel; St John the Baptist; the Madonna de Velo. From the Academia di Belli Arti: the Madonna della [?Fata],; Madonna col bambino. He regrets that the others are missing, and asks Becker to tell Prince Albert that it is not for lack of zeal on his part, but is due to Italian ways. |
