| Description | Craven states that he was unable to answer Russell's letter as Grillet had been summoned to Gaeta by Cialdini and is still there. He has, however, found a young Florentine photographer who he is confident can carry out the Prince's commission. Craven has also applied for permission for the works by Raphael in the Museum to be photographed, and hopes to be able to write to Sir Charles Phipps next week to tell him that the work has been done.
He will also tell Phipps about the pictures not in the Museum of which he sent a list, and which are no longer in the private collections to which they formerly belonged. He asks Russell to pass this on to Phipps or Ruland (mis-spelt Pruland), and tell them that he has tried out the new photographer with 'a wretched old defaced Botticelli', using Craven's apparatus, and that he is quite sure the photographer will do well with his own apparatus and the Raphaels.
Only the first 2 1/2 pages of the letter are extant; the bottom half of the second page has been cut off and the text on the back of the top half crossed out, presumably because it was not relevant to the Prince's commission. |
