TitleLetter from J.D. Passavant to Charles Ruland sending details of the photographs of the Raphael Cartoons of which the Städel Institute is still waiting for photographs.
Date10 June 1860
WriterPassavant, Johann David; Curator of the Städel'sches Kunstitut in Frankfurt, biographer of Raphael
AddresseeRuland, Charles; Librarian to the Prince Consort
DescriptionIn reply to a letter from Ruland (who was in turn replying to Passavant's earlier letter, see VIC/ADDA10/85/460). Passavant thanks him for offering to take over where Dr. Becker left off, in arranging for the missing photographs of the Raphael Cartoons to be sent to the Städel Institute.
He states that they have already received 28 of the 40 Studies of individual heads from the Cartoons, so 12 are still to come. It is impossible to tell which these are from the very imprecise and badly drawn up price list. They are no doubt those that were photographed after the first batch was sent off by Dr. Becker. But as a guide, Passavant encloses a list of the latter (see VIC/ADDA10/85/463).
What is missing are the 12 Studies, the photographs of the complete compositions of the 7 Cartoons in the first size, two sets of the same in the second size, and the 5 Studies after Christ's Charge to Peter.
Passavant reiterates that they have received no invoice for the 28 photographs already received; he asks whether Dr. Becker's previous statement that payment could be made through Gogel Koch & Co in Frankfurt is still valid.
