| Description | Fierlants apologises for the delay caused by Comte Charles d'Oultremont's absence and the poor weather, and explains that the Count's cartoon was very difficult to photograph owing to its poor state, the colour of the paper, damage caused when it was glued onto canvas and darkening due to age.
He has done everything he could and asks Ruland to tell the Prince Consort that it was impossible to produce a better result. He is sending two plates of different sizes, with several prints, of which the yellow-toned one is closest to the colour of the original, and gives technical instructions for achieving this result with further prints.
He is sending the plates and prints with Baron Van Praet, who is accompanying King Leopold to London tomorrow. Finally, he states that he cannot name a price for his work because he is not satisfied with it. If the Prince gave him another commission to which he could do justice, he would not hesitate to charge for his work, but anything he asked for this time would be too much.
A note on the back of the letter by Ruland dated 12 June records, nevertheless, that the photographer was to be paid 350 francs. |
