TitleCopy letter from Sir Arthur Magenis, the British Envoy to Sweden, to General Charles Grey regarding the photographing of the drawings by Raphael in the Swedish royal collection.
Date30 May 1859
WriterMagenis, Arthur, Sir; British Envoy to Sweden 1854-1859
AddresseeGrey, Charles, Maj-Gen. Hon.; Private Secretary to the Prince Consort
DescriptionMagenis reports that he has found and bought a copy of Pehr Tham's 'Antiquar Resa' with the engraving to which Dr Becker's memorandum referred, and has sent it to Grey. He has looked at the 26 Raphael drawings in the royal collection in Stockholm bought at the Crozat sale: 12 are landscapes or slight and faint tracings of architectural subjects which he doubts could be photographed. The other 14 are sepia sketches, including a fine one of Paul preaching before Festus, and these he thinks would be of interest.
Manderström has obtained permission for the photography, and Hansen, a Norwegian photographer, has agreed to do the work if he can have the drawings in his own studio, but not until July. Magenis thinks his charges, of which he gives details according to size, are high, but leaves it to Becker to decide before ordering the photographs, adding that the prices will be even higher if the negatives are included, as otherwise the photographer could sell prints.
