| Description | Waagen states that he can at last send the photographs requested by Prince Albert, taken by the best photographer in Berlin, [Carl Gustav] Oehme, albeit after some delay. He is also sending one of the Virgin and the Christ Child blessing St John which Passavant accepts as by Raphael and which will be included in the new edition of his book; Waagen thinks it could be placed after Passavant's No. 8. The Christ ascribed to Raphael by everyone except Passavant is so pale that it could not be photographed.
Waagen has not had the picture which only Rumohr ascribed to Raphael (tondo, see VIC/ADDA10/85/331) photographed as it was not clear from Becker's letter whether the Prince wanted it, but also because Ludwig Gruner, who has been in Berlin lately, agrees with Waagen that it is not by Raphael.
Waagen states what he has paid for the photography and asks to be refunded. He draws attention to a little-known Madonna by Raphael in the possession of the Duke of Terranuova in Naples, of which the King of Prussia has had an excellent copy made, and offers to have this photographed for the Prince if he would like. He expresses his sympathy over the Prince's recent illness, and asks Becker to convey his respects to HRH. |
