TitleLetter from Ludwig Gruner to Dr. Ernst Becker listing prints after Raphael that he has bought for the Prince Consort.
Date5 February 1858
WriterGruner, Ludwig; Director of the Königliches Kupferstich-Kabinett, Dresden
AddresseeBecker, Ernst, Dr.; Librarian to the Prince Consort.
DescriptionGruner writes that he will send off tomorrow the items he has bought for the Prince Consort [possibly from the Krüger auction mentioned in VIC/ADDA10/85/360]. There was too much demand for the David, no. 11, to buy it cheaply; everything good sold well. He did not buy no. 32, 'Poetry' because it was not good enough. The rest are well worth the prices he paid. He goes on to list his purchases (by catalogue number only, with no description) and the prices paid, and comments that he added the last, no. 215, because it is an outstandingly good print of which the original is rightly attributed to Raphael. The total sum amounts to £7.12.0., which he asks Becker to have paid into his London bank.
Gruner comments that life will soon become calmer at court [no doubt a reference to the recent marriage of the Princess Royal] so that he hopes he may look forward to some decisions from the Prince.
A note by Becker at the top of the letter records that he has acknowledged receipt and the money has been paid; another note on the reverse records that the letter concerns 'Stiche nach Raphael' - prints after Raphael.
