Description | Correspondence concerning the collection of engravings and photographs of all known paintings and drawings by Raphael and his imitators which the Prince Consort assembled for the Royal Library, beginning in 1853. Most of the correspondence relates to the photographing of drawings and paintings in the possession of various persons and institutions, and it is conducted by the Prince's German Librarians, first Dr Ernst Becker and then Charles Ruland. The correspondence is arranged by country and chronologically within each country's section, and it is numbered continuously. It is bound in three volumes: 1. England (1-208) 31 March 1853-11 December 1861 2. France (209-250) 7 January 1856-12 January 1861; Italy (251-306) 26 November 1856-2 March 1863; Spain (307-330) 21 May 1858-May 1860 3. Germany (331-493) 2 May 1853-17 October 1861; Holland (494-514) 25 June 1859-20 November 1861; Belgium (515-521) 27 January-30 May 1860; Denmark (522-526) 22 March 1856-21 February 1860; Sweden (527-545) 29 April 1859-8 May 1860; Russia (546-561) 28 January 1856-30 June 1861 These volumes are followed by an additional slim volume (VIC/ADDA10/85/562) listing 'Desiderata' for the Raphael Collection, dated 1864, and by a small folder of miscellaneous later correspondence related to the collection, extracted from the collection in 1987 (VIC/ADDA10/85/563-568). |
