TitleLetter from Lord Melbourne to Queen Victoria
Date24 April 1841
WriterMelbourne, 2nd Viscount
AddresseeVictoria, Queen
DescriptionCabinet considered this unfortunate case. Certain that a motion will be made in the Commons for an Address to Queen Victoria to remove James Thomas, 7th Earl of Cardigan, from command of his regiment. This could not well be resisted, and yet would be an interference of the Commons with the interior discipline and government of the Army - a thing to be deprecated. Cabinet thought that Melbourne should see Lord Hill, and advise Her Majesty to remove Cardigan from his command. Melbourne has seen Hill, and left the matter with him. Hill chagrined and annoyed. Mr Labouchere (President of the Board of Trade ) desires Melbourne to submit the 5-pound piece issued from the Mint to Queen Victoria for her inspection and approbation.
