Description
Cabinet decided that it could not sanction Captain Elliot's agreement with China. Necessary to demand a larger indemnity, and a more complete security for future trade. Instructions to be sent out to occupy the Island of Chusan, recall Elliot, send out another officer. Sir Henry Pottinger recommended. Lord Auckland to be entrusted with general discretionary powers for the conduct of the expedition. [?Fanny] delighted and grateful for Queen Victoria's offer of the Lodge in Richmond Park.
