Description
Melbourne has found great difficulty in keeping Cabinet steady and united on the Oriental Question and policy towards Mehemet Ali. Considerable irritation exists. Lord Clanricarde determined on returning to St Petersburg and has already started. Pleased with his reception in Berlin. Melbourne has not had time to read what are in the despatch boxes. A great number have accumulated - some interesting and important. The Portuguese Government actuated by a desire to accommodate matters with Great Britain. Melbourne suggests that Queen Victoria writes to Palmerston and thus facilitate matters.
