Description
Lord Derby on the importance of giving naval protection to Vancouver's Island (British Columbia) in the event of disturbance 'from the miscellaneous influx of a not over orderly population'. Lord Palmerston on Queen Victoria's visit to the Princess Royal in Germany. Lord Derby on the satisfactory news concerning China. Tribute to Lord Elgin (James Bruce, 8th Earl of Elgin). Doubts as to indemnity expressed in telegrams from St Petersburg. Hopes of being able to recall some of the fleet. Lord Derby's regret at Her Majesty's disapproval of his ideas regarding Colonial honours. His hope of explaining his views more fully. Sir E. Lytton's pleasure at permission to submit some Colonial names for a Companionship (C.B.).
