Description
Sir G. Lewis's willingness to go to the War Office, on Lord Herbert's resignation. Sir G. Grey to take Home Office and Mr Cardwell the Duchy of Lancaster, subject to Queen Victoria's approval. Chichester S. Fortescue proposed as Chief Secretary for Ireland. Lord Palmerston on a suggestion as to W.E. Gladstone standing for the City of London or as the third member for South Lancashire. Sir Alexander Cockburn and Vice Admiral Sir Maurice Berkeley recommended by Lord Palmerston for peerages. Grounds for their submission. Admiral Berkeley's petition for a barony by tenure was decided against him some time ago. Absence of any wish on the part of Lord John Russell to disturb Granville George, 2nd Earl Granville, in his Leadership of the House of Lords.
