Description
Queen Victoria's approval of the Government changes submitted by Lord Palmerston [VIC/MAIN/A/29/97]. Her readiness to confer an earldom on Lord John Russell at the time desired, but unwilling to give a Garter at same time. The Duke of Somerset's and Charles John, 1st Earl Canning's appointments as Knights of the Garter (K.G.) approved. Proposal for a grant of a peerage to Sir Maurice Berkeley agreed. Her Majesty's unwillingness to raise Sir Alexander Cockburn (Chief Justice of the Queen's Bench) to the peerage. Grounds for her refusal. Her Majesty's reply to Lord Palmerston's suggested change of seat for W.E. Gladstone.
