Description
Correspondence on the Government defeat between Queen Victoria and Lord Palmerston. Her Majesty's concern at these constant defeats. Her observations on Lowe's resignation. Strong comment on the Law Officers. Lord Palmerston on Lord Robert Cecil: 'Who never loses an opportunity of saying or doing an unhandsome thing, lost a fair opportunity of taking a handsome line'. Lord Palmerston on the allegation as to Spencer Compton C., Marquess of Hartington's seat becoming vacant, in view of the excess of Under Secretaries in the House of Commons. Lord Palmerston on a change in General Giuseppe Garibaldi's plans, urged especially by Lord Shaftesbury. Duke of Sutherland to take him and his sons back to Caprera in his yacht. Advantage of his having been taken up by the aristocracy and not left in the hands of agitators. Satisfaction to the nation. Estimate of his character and capacity. His attitude to the question of the conquest of Venetia and Rome.
