Description | Lord Melbourne's satisfaction that Queen Victoria and Russell did not call on him to take a place in the new Ministry. He saw that Peel's Government must go, and he determined to take no part in the crisis, being unequal to the work because of weakness. He would wait on Her Majesty on Saturday, but fears the weight of the full dress uniform. Melbourne says that what Queen Victoria remarks about public affairs, and the state of parties in Parliament, is true. In November Peel had a party which might have enabled him to have long carried on the Government, had he not scattered it to the winds. He saw that Peel's Government could not last long. |
