Letter from Sir Robert Peel to Queen Victoria
Date
11 November 1842
Writer
Peel, Robert, Sir, 2nd Baronet
Addressee
Victoria, Queen
Description
Peel had an interview with the Duke of Cambridge. Public feeling was that the Duke was rich. His Royal Highness feels that in the present state of the country and public revenue, caution is requisite in asking for a grant of public money [for Princess Augusta]. Sir Robert Peel to Queen Victoria concerning the King of Hanover's claim on the Crown Jewels. Cabinet's consideration of whether arbitration, or any other step, would be imprudent without legal advice. Controversy in a Court of Justice is to be avoided, yet any fair advantage for the Crown must not be relinquished. Proposes consulting the Attorney-General and Queen's Advocate. Their report to be submitted to Her Majesty.
