Description | Private letter from Sir George Sinclair on the subject of the letter to the Moderator of the General Assembly [regarding "A Protest and Declaration of Right"]. Sinclair, an influential member of moderate party, urges accommodation. Peel understands that the violent party do not yet contemplate secession. They intend to petition Parliament. If Parliament refuses concession they will secede. Lord Courtenay, son of the Earl of Devon, and Mr Miles, Member of Parliament for Bristol, will move and second the Address in answer to the Speech from the Throne. Wellington has asked the Duke of Cleveland and Earl of Eglinton to do the same in the Lords. |
