Title
Letter from Sir Robert Peel to Queen Victoria
Date
18 February 1843
Writer
Peel, Robert, Sir, 2nd Baronet
Addressee
Victoria, Queen
Description
Mr Cobden's (Chief Patron of the Anti-Corn-Law League) speech on Howick's motion, on the state of the country, created great excitement. He held that Peel ought to be held 'individually responsible for the distress of the country'. Peel answered, charging Cobden with using language calculated to excite personal violence. [Undoubtedly referring to MacNaghten's attempt on Peel's life.] Howick's motion rejected by majority of 114.
