Title
Letter from Sir Robert Peel to Queen Victoria
Date
24 June 1843
Writer
Peel, Robert, Sir, 2nd Baronet
Addressee
Victoria, Queen
Description
Lord Palmerston introduced a discussion in the Commons on the general state of Ireland. Censured the policy of Government with regard to Ireland, yet was against the Repeal of the Union and the subversion of the Protestant Church. Urged policy of political franchises and provision for Roman Catholic Clergy. No progress on the Irish Arms Bill. Discussion wasted on an absurd suggestion of Sir W. Barron that a bill he deemed unjust for Ireland should be extended to Great Britain. Too absurd for division. One division going into Committee on a proposal to postpone first clause of the Irish Arms Bill. Negatived. Motion for adjournment carried.
