Description | Peel states that he has had conversation with Lord Aberdeen about a Commercial Treaty with Portugal. Aberdeen suggests that he should request the Duc de Palmella to state in confidence, in writing, the exact nature of the communication he is authorised to make to the British Government on the subject of Commercial intercourse between the two countries. The subject one of great importance, but in view of the state of the revenue and the trade of this country, should be dealt with caution. The wine trade calls for consideration. Peel sends papers which show returns for 6 years, exhibiting serious fluctuations in duty. Letter enclosed from eminent wine traders. |
