DescriptionPeel's pleasure at Queen Victoria's safe arrival at Coburg. Peel tells Her Majesty about the good weather and that the harvest is progressing favourably. The country is tranquil, except for riotous proceedings at Dunfermline. Hopes for safe return. Vacancy in Southwark through the death of Mr Wood. Two Radicals and a Conservative in the field. Symptoms of decline of Repeal of the Union agitation. "Repeal Rent" fast declining in amount. Roman Catholic priests in many instances actively co-operating with the Government. The Roman Catholic Primate, Dr Crolly, has thrown confusion into the ranks of Repealers and the followers of O'Connell by a public declaration in favour of the principle of New Colleges. No appointments to them as yet. Lord Heytesbury examining localities which can enter into competition as sites for Irish colleges - Cork, Galway, Belfast, and Armagh.
