TitleLetter from Sir Robert Peel to Queen Victoria
Date11 October 1845
WriterPeel, Robert, Sir, 2nd Baronet
AddresseeVictoria, Queen
DescriptionThe Archbishop of Canterbury will see the Bishop of Oxford regarding an exchange of Sees. The Bishop declined Lichfield, but Bath and Wells more desirable. The Earl of Lonsdale wishes to retire from the Post Office. Difficult to name a successor to a difficult post. Peel recommends Lord Dalhousie, but thinks he will prefer to keep his present place. Need for a really good man. Earl of St Germans would probably decline unless offered a seat in Cabinet, which Peel could not recommend. Shall Peel ask St Germans without a Cabinet seat? The possible retirement of the Duke of Sutherland from the Lieutenancy of Shropshire, leads Peel to name successor. Names Lord Powis, who would then vacate Montgomery. Sir Watkin Wynn might be appointed to that county.
