TitleLetter from Sir Robert Peel to Queen Victoria
Date11 February 1845
WriterPeel, Robert, Sir, 2nd Baronet
AddresseeVictoria, Queen
DescriptionPeel says plans and estimates have been prepared for the changes at Buckingham Palace. Assured Queen Victoria of the willingness of the Commons to do what is requisite, but advises no immediate reference. Government must propose the continuation of Income Tax, to meet Estimates connected with necessary defences of the country. [Sum required 1,300,000.] Peel thinks it will be unfortunate to allow the public mind to connect the changes at Buckingham Palace with this tax, having in view the angry discussion on the palace at other times. He will endeavour to keep the two things separate. Harbours of Refuge not provided for in the Estimates. Postponed, therefore, to another year. Also defences of the Channel Islands.
