Letter from Lord John Russell to Queen Victoria
Date
29 January 1850
Writer
Russell, John, Lord
Addressee
Victoria, Queen
Description
Russell says the word 'War' in the Speech has been changed to 'Civil War'. No decision about an amendment until Lord Stanley's dinner. Russell says Mr Moore, the poet, is dying, and his wife will have no provision. Asks Queen Victoria to grant her £100 a year on the Pension List. Death of Lord Jeffrey [Scottish Judge] necessitates appointment of successor. Russell suggests that the present Lord Advocate be made a Privy Councillor and then placed on the Bench. Lord Denman has not yet resigned, but will speedily do so. Has written to complain of Lord Campbell's "Life of Lord Holt". Russell says he or Palmerston must make a representation to Queen Victoria respecting the Vienna Embassy.
