Date7 February 1850
WriterRussell, John, Lord
AddresseeVictoria, Queen
DescriptionHawes' motion for the re-appointment of Special Committee on grievances [relating to Ceylon]. Disraeli attempted to tack on a Censure on Government for omitting to summon certain witnesses. Rejected. A later motion to summon witnesses on the authority of the House was only rejected by a majority of nine. Jealousy of the House (of Commons) of its authority and prevailing prejudice against Lord Grey caused the near division.
